An Active Irradiation System with Automatic Beam Positioning and Focusing for a Medical Cyclotron

A novel active focusing system was developed for enhancing the irradiation performance of 18 MeV medical cyclotron in operation at Bern University Hospital view production non-conventional radioisotopes using solid targets. In several cases, such as 43Sc and 44Sc, beam has to be kept stable within a very small target about 5 mm diameter. For this purpose, we conceived realized an apparatus based on compact steering magnet followed by two-dimensional monitoring detector specific feedback software that drives optimize given set-up. We report design, realization validation tests performed research transfer line cyclotron. demonstrated spot can thanks fact automatically reacts perturbations. Compactness is one key features system, allowing its use accelerator facilities with limited space, cyclotrons radioisotope production.
